Use reputable jewelers when selling your gold

With gold prices continuing to be at all-time highs - just over $1,200 per ounce - many Arizona residents are rummaging through old jewelry boxes for a chance to make an extra buck. But you should know sellers need to be wary.

Great Adventure Race

Labor Day is here and that means the Great Adventure Race will be happening Sunday, Sept. 5 at the Peterson home in Willcox! John has brought his tractor home and has already built a new tortuous game. I think it is going to be fun! We have had some obstacles to overcome this year, but things are finally falling into place. We are really looking forward to the weekend.

Fall clean-up

It is hard to believe summer is drawing to a close and the fall festivities are about to begin, as it seems like yesterday when we got together and did the spring clean up. The date for the next cleanup is Saturday, Sept. 26 at 7:30 a.m. starting in Railroad Park with a rousing speech by Kathy Smith from the Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture followed by an all out assault on the trash and litter accumulated since April.

New chance costly

Re: Arizona Range News, August 11, 2010 headline "Condemned killer gets new chance." People living in Willcox during April, 1997, will remember the brutal and senseless rape/murder of Ms. Judith Coughlin, the newly hired manager of the Sands Motel. The killer, motel guest Kyle David Sharp, had called the desk telling Ms. Coughlin there were no towels in his room. When she fell for his ruse, she was killed after delivering the towels. Her young son, frightened when his mother did not return to the office, called police who found Sharp in a drug-induced stupor, and Ms. Coughlin dead inside the room.

Inspiration motivates

Thank you, Kathy Robbins and Mary Bardella, for your letters last week challenging Ms. de la Garza's negative comments on our president in her letter published the previous week. I applaud your courage for speaking out. Personally, what de la Garza wrote surprised me a little because I was under the impression she considers herself an accomplished writer, and using words a person says out of context, is, in my opinion, beneath her.

Job fair success

We want to thank the Community of Willcox for supporting the Willcox Job Fair. The Willcox Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture partnered with Cochise County Workforce Development to sponsor a Job Fair at the Willcox Community Center last Thursday, Aug. 19. There were 16 businesses and organizations represented and over 80 job seekers who participated.

Creative solution makes improvements possible

This is the time of year when Cochise County residents in more rural areas groan because of the condition of dirt roads. Regardless of how many times the county grades, each time it rains they are once again full of small canyons and mud.

Little League sponsors

Willcox Little League would like to thank all of our sponsors who helped make this year a great year.

The Sulphur Springs Valley Historical Society sends a big "thank you" to all those who made our second Vacation History Week a big success.

Public service: Plenty of sacrifice, little thanks

Last week this newspaper celebrated our public servants. This week and next week, we will celebrate more. Some choose public service as a career path, and others simply volunteer and do something else for a day job. But for those involved in public safety, firefighting or emergency health services, there are not enough ways to say thank you.

Accuracy required

The Willcox resident who refers to our current President as an un-patriotic individual who calls us names has presented incorrect information to substantiate her point. President Obama NEVER said "I'm not a citizen of America, I'm a citizen of the world." In his speech in Germany the President stated, "I'm a proud US citizen and a fellow citizen of the world". True words considering America is the melting pot of world cultures.

Holes in Heaven

The "Wesley Moore and Friends 'Holes in Heaven' Golf Tournament" held on July 31, 2010 was a HUGE success. The turnout of players was incredible, the weather cooperated, and the food was delicious. Monies raised, after expenses, totaled $2,133 and will be donated to the Willcox High School Golf Team. The intent of these funds is to purchase new golf bags each year for the Seniors to keep as their own personal bag. Remaining funds would then be used to purchase new shirts if needed, and/or to help with expenses when they go to state.

Executive overreach

A draft memo surfaced from the Dept. of Homeland Security suggesting ways to administratively circumvent existing law to allow several categories of illegal immigrants to avoid deportation and, indeed, for some to be granted permanent residency. The most disturbing thing about this was the reason for saying this. This was being proposed "in the absence of comprehensive immigration reform."

No flag on the casket

The Catholic Church has a policy that forbids the placing of the American Flag on the casket of a veteran inside the church.

Attack on president

I disagree with Ms. de la Garza's attacks on President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. Her attacks lack the facts to support them. The name calling by the Tea Party and birthers occur on a daily basis. I am a proud Democrat who voted for President Obama in 2008 and will re-elect him in 2012.
