Public input sought on land management
The Douglas Ranger District, Coronado National Forest, invites the public to comment on a proposed multi-partner landscape-scale analysis of lands within and surrounding the Chiricahua and Dragoon mountain ranges located in Cochise County, southeastern Arizona. Informational meetings on the Chiricahua-Dragoon FireScape project will be held as follows:
Rodeo, N.M.: Tuesday, Feb. 9, 5 to 7 p.m. at the Rodeo Community Center, 16 Hickory Street, Rodeo, NM
Douglas, Ariz.: Wednesday, Feb. 10, 5 to 7 p.m. at the Douglas Visitor Center, 345 16th Street, Douglas, Ariz.
Willcox, Ariz.: Thursday, Feb. 11, 5 to 7 p.m. at the Valley Telecom Building, 752 E. Maley Street, Willcox, Ariz..
Each meeting will consist of a presentation on the proposal, followed by a question and answer period. Public input is sought regarding the proposal before formal analysis begins. Questions and comments may be directed to the Douglas Ranger District at (520) 364-6800 or by email at comments-southwestern-coronado@fs.fed.us with "Chiricahua-Dragoon FireScape" in the subject line.
The project is being proposed to coordinate Forest Service fuels reduction and fire management activities with those of Chiricahua National Monument, Ft. Bowie National Historic Site, and other land managers in the Chiricahua and Dragoon mountains. The project is intended to create resilient landscapes which can survive wildfire as healthy ecosystems, better protect values at risk, reduce the threat of wildfire to neighboring communities, and return fire as a natural process to ecosystems which benefit from it. The Coronado is leading the effort in partnership with the Arizona State Land Department, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, The Nature Conservancy, University of Arizona, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, as well as many neighboring private landowners.
