Cell phone program for low income residents

Published: Wednesday, July 8, 2009 1:44 PM CDT
A discounted cell phone program being promoted in Cochise County could benefit many small businesses, says George Scott of the Southeast Arizona Economic Development Group.

SPRINT's Lifeline program is designed for low income and rural customers who cannot afford cell service or who have difficulty qualifying for a contract. The program provides a 200 minute plan for only $16.49 per month and includes a free phone.

"I see this program helping a number of Cochise County residents who run home-based businesses and on-the-road businesses," says Scott.

Lifeline waives the credit check and deposit requirements if customers agree to a $75 account limit.

Eligible Lifeline applicants must demonstrate a total household income at or below 150 percent of federal poverty guidelines or that the household receives public assistance -such as food stamps, SSI, Medicare, federal housing, state child health insurance, or free school lunches.

Cochise County residents interested in Lifeline can call SPRINT at 1-866-827-3290 for a review of their eligibility; an application is then mailed to residents who qualify.
