Please return "Deputy Jake"
By Carol Broeder/Arizona Range News
The "Marshal" of Willcox has lost his deputy.
A life-size cowboy dummy, known as "Deputy Jake," was taken from the front of Marshal Bo's Old West Mercantile on Railroad Avenue.
He was last seen late Tuesday night at his usual post -- sitting on a bench in front of the shop, said owner Marshal Bo Downey.
The theft was reported to the Willcox Police Department, who took a report at 10:59 a.m. on Wednesday, June 24. However, Downey and his family are "really not interested in prosecution," he said.
"We're just interested in getting it back," he said. "We want the person who took it to return it, or someone else to return it."
"He's been a loyal friend," said Downey, explaining that "Deputy Jake" made the move with them from their shop in California to Willcox last year.
"We've had him around for about eight years," he said.
"He's been a good deputy," said Downey. "He's always enjoyed watching the train. Who knows - he may have gotten lonely and wandered off."
Deputy Jake sports a New Mexico deputy badge, and his shirt is ripped on the left side from a previous incident with a squirrel.
"Maybe somebody will buy him a new shirt," Downey added good-naturedly.
Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call Downey at (520) 507-8525. A $100 reward is being offered.
"We will pay you - no questions asked," says the sign now in front of the shop.
